The preamble to The University of Queensland Act, assented to in December 1909, stated:

Whereas it is desirable to promote sound learning, to encourage original research and invention, and to provide the means of obtaining a liberal and practical education in the several pursuits and professions of life in Queensland, and for such purposes to incorporate and endow a University open to all classes and denominations of His Majesty’s subjects.

Clearly UQ, Queensland and the global environment have changed dramatically since the University was established. Nevertheless the key ideas set out in the preamble remain very relevant – a quality learning experience, liberal and professional education, original research, application of knowledge, and equity.

In our recent history we have achieved real success alongside rapid growth and change. We have also experienced difficult circumstances and those cumulative experiences have caused us to reflect on what it is that defines our university and its aspirations.

Preamble to Mission, Vision and Values

A theme has emerged from the consultation around the importance of recognising that, through our history and heritage as a university established by state legislation, we have particular responsibilities to the state of Queensland. At the same time, we are part of the national higher education sector and our continued success is integrally linked to our global relevance. A preamble to the Mission, Vision and Values provides an opportunity to contextualise the statements within the University’s history, heritage and relevance globally and to the state of Queensland.

The University of Queensland Mission, Vision and Values have been developed in the context of the University’s history and heritage as the first university in the state of Queensland. UQ’s fundamental role in educating students and in developing, applying and transferring knowledge throughout our global community guides our ongoing pursuit of excellence.

Mission, Vision and Values

Our Mission, Vision and Values will guide our future strategies and priorities. They provide tools to guide day-to-day processes and behaviours, and be reflected in all our decisions and activities, including:

  • monitoring policies and procedures, ensuring that the right activities are valued and rewarded; and
  • helping to ensure consistent purpose and commitment from our institution’s leaders.

The values of the University will be implemented through the strategic plan and supported by a set of principles and organisational objectives that will guide decisions and behaviour.

A Mission statement defines the purpose of an organization and answers three questions about why an organization exists – what it does, who it does it for and how it does it.

The University of Queensland positively influences society by engaging in the pursuit of excellence through the creation, preservation, transfer and application of knowledge. UQ helps shape the future by bringing together and developing leaders in their fields to inspire the next generation and to advance ideas that benefit the world. UQ strives for the personal and professional success of its students, staff and alumni.

A Vision statement is an aspirational description of what an organization would like to achieve or accomplish. It is intended to serve as a clear guide for navigating the institution through current and future courses of action. The statement must align with the strategic directions of the University. A Vision should be forward looking and active.

UQ: knowledge leadership for a better world
